Frequently Asked Questions

What is the YMCA?

The YMCA is a not-for-profit, human service organization funded by membership and program fees, contributions for YMCA friends, corporations, foundations, grants, and United Way support.

The YMCA operates day and resident camps, health and fitness programs, youth programs, adult and senior programs, family programs, and much more. Each YMCA branch is unique and responds to the needs of its own community.

What is the difference between the Y Partners campaign and the Capital Campaign?

At first glance, it may be difficult to understand why the YMCA is asking you for contributions to two different campaigns. However, there are vital differences between these campaigns, and it is important to know why your support for both of these campaigns is vital.

The Y Partners Annual Campaign provides financial assistance scholarships and program subsidies to low income individuals and families. Funds raised through Y Partners assure that no one is ever turned away from YMCA membership and programs due to financial need.

Contributions to the Commitment to Community Capital Campaign go to “brick and mortar” projects. The success of the Capital Campaign will allow us to make necessary upgrades to our facilities in order to meet the growing demands of our communities, and provide high-quality service and programs in our neighborhoods.

Why should I give money to the Y when I already pay membership dues?

Your dues cover the costs of Y membership, but they do not support additional costs for outreach programs and financial assistance. The YMCA needs your support in this campaign to reach into the community and provide safe, high quality, character-building programs for all.

Doesn’t the YMCA receive funds for United Way?

The YMCA is a United Way agency. The United Way is an important partner in helping the YMCA deliver programs and services. However, the majority of YMCA community outreach is supported by funds raised in the our Y Partners Annual support campaign.

Why should I give to the Y if I’m not a member?

Your support is still needed! You benefit by having a strong YMCA in your community that provides meaningful opportunities to help young people grow into responsible adults. The YMCA makes your community a better place to live and work.

How do I know my contribution will stay in my community?

Each YMCA participates in the Y Partners campaign. The funds raised in each branch campaign are allocated to the branch. Contributions are used to serve youth and families through branch outreach programs and financial assistance for those who otherwise could not afford a YMCA experience. It does not pay for branch operators, campaign expenses, or support for other branches.

I gave to the YMCA last year. Isn’t it too soon to be asking again?

Your contribution last year helped the YMCA deliver vital programs for those people in our community who need a helping hand. However, these programs will not endure without your continued support. This is an annual campaign. You can pledge now and pay later in the year. The YMCA can bill you one time or in installments.

How are my online gifts processed?

Your gift will be processed through IATS, International Automated Transactions Service. A Ticketmaster company. Your total gift will go to the YMCA. You will be notified of your tax-deductible donation.

Your donation may be UNDESIGNATED or DESIGNATED. Undesignated gifts support the YMCA’s work throughout our community, and are used where needed most. You may also designate your gift to benefit a branch, a specific program, a capital project, or endowment fund. Simply indicate where you would like your gift directed when you complete the donation form.

Financial Assistance

YMCA membership and programs are open to everyone. To the extent possible, financial assistance is made available to those in need, thanks to the generosity of the many friends and donors of the YMCA.
